I can’t think of a good clickbait headline involving “Beetlejuice”

Haven’t we been down this road before?

Winona Ryder appeared on Monday’s Late Night with Seth Meyers and said that Tim Burton was working on a follow-up to Beetlejuice. She was also quick to say that she didn’t know much more than the general public did.

So of course, the internet has exploded with pronouncements that Beetlejuice 2 is “happening.”

These same rumors were floating around in 2013, when Burton, Keaton, and Ryder were effectively saying, “yeah, it would be cool to work together again.” Judging from the interview above, it sounds like Ryder is referencing those comments from a couple of years ago. Listen to what she’s actually saying before leaping to the conclusion that this movie is definitely being made.

All I’ve seen is creative talent talking about the possibility of exploring that world again. It’s public knowledge that Seth Grahame-Smith is writing a script for a Beetlejuice sequel, but that’s very different than a budget and filming start date.

I’m not saying that there won’t be a Beetlejuice sequel. In fact, I would be surprised if there wasn’t some serious discussion about it somewhere. But right now all I’m seeing is offhand comments and speculation. The fact that Winona Ryder is talking about Beetlejuice is cool; Ryder saying there’s the possibility of a follow-up is noteworthy. But seriously, folks — pump the brakes until there’s an official press release.
